The other day I stumbled upon something very interesting. Evidently, Robert Sternberg a renowned American psychologist developed a theory of love simply called "The Triangular Theory of Love." His theory characterizes love under the perspective of interpersonal relationships such as family relationships, intimate relationships, friendship, Platonic love, soul mates, brotherhood/sisterhood and soul mates. The theory has three different components:
Intimacy- Which includes feeling of closeness, connection and bond.
Passion- Includes drives that lead to romance, physical attraction and sexual contact.
Commitment-Which includes, in the short term the decision to remain with one another and in
the long term, plans and dreams made with one another.
Supposedly, the "amount" of love one experiences depends on the absolute strength of these three components. The “type” of love one experiences depends on their strengths relative to each other. Different stages and types of love can be explained as different combinations of these three components; for example, the strength and affect of each component changes over time as a romantic relationship develops.
